Early Review: Magic Breaks by Ilona Andrews

Tuesday, July 22, 2014 with
Title: Magic Breaks
Series: Kate Daniels #7
Author: Ilona Andrews
Release Date: July 29, 2014
Publisher: Ace
Length: 400pgs

No matter how much the paranormal politics of Atlanta change, one thing always remains the same: if there’s trouble, Kate Daniels will be in the middle of it…

As the mate of the Beast Lord, Curran, former mercenary Kate Daniels has more responsibilities than it seems possible to juggle. Not only is she still struggling to keep her investigative business afloat, she must now deal with the affairs of the pack, including preparing her people for attack from Roland, a cruel ancient being with god-like powers. Since Kate’s connection to Roland has come out into the open, no one is safe—especially those closest to Kate.

As Roland’s long shadow looms ever nearer, Kate is called to attend the Conclave, a gathering of the leaders from the various supernatural factions in Atlanta. When one of the Masters of the Dead is found murdered there, apparently at the hands of a shapeshifter, Kate is given only twenty-four hours to hunt down the killer. And this time, if she fails, she’ll find herself embroiled in a war which could destroy everything she holds dear…

Praise for the Kate Daniels novels:

“One of the brightest voices in urban fantasy, and one of my favorite authors. Ilona Andrews delivers only the best.”—New York Times bestselling author Jeaniene Frost

“Vividly imagined fight scenes, clever use of obscure mythology, a uniquely interesting setting, and rich characterization make this a rare treat.”—Publishers Weekly

Magic Breaks was everything I didn't know I wanted in a Kate Daniels book and more. Magic Breaks is so unlike Magic Rises and while I loved Magic Rises more that I can possible express, I'm not sure that I could have gone through that kind of emotional trauma again, and yes, I do mean trauma. Magic Rises made me hurt! You know that ache in your chest when you get a phone call and are told someone in your family died...yea it was that kind of feeling. Magic Rises put me through the ringer and Magic Breaks slowly put the pieces of my heart back together for Kate and Curran. Kate has sacrificed so much for the pack. She has leaked blood, sweat, and tears for them and in Magic Breaks, her bonds with the people she has fought so hard to protect are tested when the truth behind her relationship to Roland goes public.

Roland is just as sinister and power hungry as we have always been led to believe, but there are layers to him that make him much more interesting than I'd thought he would be.  Watching the moment that Kate and Roland meet unfold was exciting beyond belief and while Hugh is still a sick bastard with a superiority complex, for some reason I still like the guy. Andrews really knows how to pen the enemy and make you love what a complete bastard they are.

Magic Breaks without a doubt is a must read for 2014 and while it can be read as a standalone, you're sorely missing out if you bypass books 1-6. The Kate Daniels series continues to be my all time favorite series out there all the way through book 7. Andrews does not disappoint.

lona Andrews is the pseudonym for a husband-and-wife writing team. author2smIlona is a native-born Russian and Gordon is a former communications sergeant in the U.S. Army. Contrary to popular belief, Gordon was never an intelligence officer with a license to kill, and Ilona was never the mysterious Russian spy who seduced him. They met in college, in English Composition 101, where Ilona got a better grade. (Gordon is still sore about that.)
Gordon and Ilona currently reside in Texas with their two children, and many dogs and cats. They have co-authored two series, the bestselling urban fantasy of Kate Daniels and romantic urban fantasy of The Edge.

Favorite books with covers I would never be caught in public with

So I am actually a HUGE fan of Lora Leigh and her Breeds series. If you've seen her recent covers, they're fairly typical of any PNR series. You have a shirtless guy and some reference to an animal since they're "breeds" and all that jazz but all in all, the covers really aren't anything to be ashamed of...right?

Well, then we look back at Leigh's earlier breed covers. I actually happen to own books one and two in print version but I would NEVER take these bad boys out in public. Book one is probably my all time favorite in the series but the cover, Gah...I wonder what my mother would say?

Any covers on books you love that you wouldn't be caught in public with? Let me know in the comments below and don't forget to check out the rest of the CST crew along with our guest blogger! Woot Woot!

Review: Taut by JA Huss

Thursday, July 17, 2014 with
Title: Taut
Author: JA Huss
Series: Rook and Ronin
Release: January 18, 2014

Buy Your Copy on Amazon: Taut

Blurb: Ford Aston is known for many things. Being an emotionless, messed up bastard, a freakishly smart social outcast, and a cold, domineering master who keeps "pets" instead of girlfriends.

And after Rook broke his heart, he plans to keep it that way.

Ashleigh is known for nothing, and that's exactly what she's got going for her. She's broke, stranded in the mountains with a three month old baby, and Ford Aston is screwing with her head.

Big. Time. And she plans to mess with his right back.

It's a coy game at first, filled with flirting, and innuendo--but Ford soon realizes something is not quite right with Ashleigh. In fact, something is seriously, seriously wrong and the closer they get to their final destination, the closer Ford gets to the truth.

One night of devastation, self-loathing, and emptiness turns into the best thing that ever happened to Ford Aston. But one day of in-your-face reality threatens Ashleigh's whole existence.

Taut takes you on an adventure of of devastation and self-discovering. Both Ford and Ashleigh are lost in their own way. Both are trying to recover from a heartache that they fear has no return but in each other they find a chance at happiness and a chance to be part of something more. Part of a team, part of a family. Taut was well written and had a great story arc. My only issues with the book were the extreme amount of F-bombs. I'm never one to shy away from swearing but in Taut it was excessive and at times pulled me from the story. Also, I felt like Ford was written with almost a woman's voice. He had a lot of internal monologue that droned on and made him sound whiney which made it difficult to really get in his head and relate to his character. Ashleigh on the the other hand was written really well and I really enjoyed her characterization. All in all, the book is worth reading, just not a favorite of mine. BTW...the sex scenes were pretty great!

JA Huss is the USA Today best-selling author of the Rook and Ronin series, the epic science fiction I Am Just Junco series, and hundreds of kid-friendly science books in subjects such as biology, physics, anatomy and physiology, astronomy, and forensics. She has an undergraduate degree in equine science and a master's degree in forensic toxicology. She has never taken a creative writing class and she hopes she never will.

"Six vampires could depopulate Atlanta in a week. Six vampires piloted by navigators would do it in three days. A vampire telepathically guided by the navigator was a precious instrument with the destruction potential os a small nuclear bomb.

Review: Wicked Ink by Laura Wright

Sunday, July 13, 2014 with

Wicked Ink by: Laura Wright
Genre: NA Romance
Release Date: December 17, 2013
Pages 67

Women in his bed, celebs and rockers in his chair and a killer bank account at his disposal, life is pretty freaking swell. Then she walks back into it again. With her mismatched eyes, perfect pink mouth and a laugh that still haunts him, she gave him nothing but marvelous misery. Now she wants his hands on her again. Not for pleasure, but for pain. For Ink. A bleeding heart to match the one she left him with five years ago.

She can’t forget him. No matter how hard she’s tried. The pain she caused him in the past eats at her daily, and she can’t move on with her life. But she has a plan, a hope for redemption – a way for him to take his revenge out on her flesh. But it’ll only work if he lets her inside his exclusive world, under his famous artist’s needle and into his bed—and heart-once again.

First Ink is a short story introducing us to the lives of Rush and Addison, two individuals that use to be inseparable but stupid decisions and circumstance tore them apart. Five years later Addison wants the chance to tell Rush how she feels and she goes to great lengths to do so. I was swept away reading First Ink. I personally don't read contemporary romances that often, let alone NA material but this one sucked me in and I devoured it in one sitting before quickly purchasing the next installment in the Wicked Ink Chronicles. I not only fell in love with the story itself but with the characters. Rush and Addison are relatable and their thoughts are genuine and realistic. I wanted to root for the two of them and was biting my nails, waiting for them to figure things out. First Ink was an extraordinary introduction in Wright's Wicked Ink world and I am eager for more! The story is one that I feel we all can relate two and while yes it can be slightly predictable, it is the feel good story with the epic leaps for love that we all secretly crave.

New York Times and USA Today Bestselling Author, Laura Wright is passionate about romantic fiction. Though she has spent most of her life immersed in acting, singing and competitive ballroom dancing, when she found the world of writing and books and endless cups of coffee she knew she was home. Laura is the author of the bestselling Mark of the Vampire series and the USA Today bestselling series, Bayou Heat, which she co-authors with Alexandra Ivy.
Laura lives in Los Angeles with her husband, two young children and three love-able dogs.

Other than books what other obsessions ....err...hobbies do you have?

So I feel like somehow books find their way into all of my obsessions and I can't help it. I love music but typically because certain songs remind of me books or scenes or give me ideas for writing a book. I obsess over writing but again, book related. I edit...which is book related, and I do photographer but typically for book covers so again, book related. I think books are taking over my life! I also love social media and marketing, my BA is in marketing but yet again...most of what I promote is books *grins* Are you seeing a pattern here? My daughter however is a non book related obsession. She's so stinking cute! See images below

So basically, I work, I play with my munchkin, and let my life revolve around books :D  OOO one correction. I am OBSESSED with Scandal! That show is amazing...its not on right now *tears* but will be back soon and it is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G
What about you? Any non-bookish obsessions or hobbies or are you like me and books just consume and devour your entire existence ^_^

Excerpt—Ancient Checks and Balance system explained

“The Shadows feed on the dreams and hopes of mortals.  If they get strong enough they can release the Titans. In his quest to rid himself of the golden curse, Midas only transferred his curse to the world.  Zeus damned Midas to Earth, to oversee, regulate the gambling and protect the people from the Shadows. Dionysus was damned to the catacombs to oversee the Shadows and protect the Titan’s entrance. And Zeus, knowing Midas lust for power, picked four families to control the places where the gambling occurred. An ancient checks and balances system.”
“The Hearts, The Clubs, The Spades and The Diamonds,” I said along with A.J. as it all clicked into place like the border of a thousand piece jigsaw puzzle, but I didn’t see how that had anything to do with me.
“And I’m the Princess of Hearts.”  I tried not to laugh when I said it.  Me, a princess?  The thought was so ridiculous.  “So, what?  Do I live forever? Have to avoid sunlight?  Howl at full moons?  Tell me A.J., what does being a Heart mean?”
“You don’t live forever and you can’t really avoid the sun in Las Vegas. And I can think of some better things to do under a full moon.”  His eyes smoldered as they held me a little longer than they should have.“You’re a Heart.  Each house has a certain ability, a trademark.  The higher you’re ranking the more … potent your ability.”
